*Dr. Caccamise has very generously shared his images of patients taken while operating during the "eye season" in rural India as well as those from his private practice during the 1960's and 1970's. Many of his images are significant for their historical perspective and for techniques and conditions seen in settings in undeveloped areas.

Ciliary staphyloma with descemetocele

Ciliary staphyloma with descemetocele

This type of pathology was seen day in and day out at the Kurji Holy Family Hospital Eye Clinic. Corneal perforation - occasionally traumatic but most frequently from deficient diet, poor hygiene, smallpox, and hypopyon ulcer from preventable diseases - was a major culprit. The photograph demonstrates a permanently blind eye with a huge ciliary staphyloma and with a descemetocele of the cornea. Proper public health measures with proper nutrition would play a major role in reducing suffering and blindness in India.
