*Dr. Caccamise has very generously shared his images of patients taken while operating during the "eye season" in rural India as well as those from his private practice during the 1960's and 1970's. Many of his images are significant for their historical perspective and for techniques and conditions seen in settings in undeveloped areas.

acute endophthalmitis during immediate post- cataract surgery

This was the surgeon's nightmare during post-cataract surgery dressing changes on hospital rounds each morning - the photo was taken in 1968 at the Kurji Holy Family Hospital Eye Clinic. This catastrophe usually became apparent by the 3rd day post-op. The photo shows a fulminating endophthalmitis with a potential for a panophthalmitis. Suture-knots can be seen vaguely under the fornix-based conjunctival flap. A suture that was used to pull the flap down is apparent. An hypopyon is seen inferiorly. The marked chemosis is typical of a severe intraocular infection of this type.
