Diablo's Hook (Kuglen Hook)

Contributor: Thomas A. Oetting, MS, MD

length: 1:08

The Kuglen hook can be one of the most important instruments in the cataract tray. One of the UI residents years ago used to call it "Diablo's instrument" as it can catch on the capsule if you are not careful. In this video you can see that a junior resident, doing the back part of a case, caught the anterior capsule with the Kuglen hook which fortunately did not result in any zonular or capsular damage. He was having trouble positioning the IOL so Dr. Oetting took over at the end of the video taking care to not catch the capsule again. This is a good example of the need to respect Diablo's hook.
