Light Pipe Rhexis

Thomas A. Oetting, Wallace L.M. Alward, MD

Occasionally, despite capsular stain, one still cannot visualize the anterior capsule when there is corneal opacification from edema, scarring, pannus etc. One helpful technique to visualize the anterior capsule is to use side lighting with a vitrectomy light pipe or another intense side light. I learned this techniques from Dr. Ayad Farjo, who was at that time a professor at Iowa. In this case, Dr. Lee Alward (see www.gonioscopy.org) helped by guiding the light pipe.
