Boston keratoprosthesis, type I

Contributors: Jesse Vislisel, MD and Kenneth Goins, MD

The Boston keratoprosthesis (KPro) is an artificial cornea that is generally reserved for individuals who are not candidates for traditional corneal transplant procedures. This patient had history of 3 failed DSAEK grafts in the setting of prior iritis, aphakic glaucoma, and a glaucoma seton. It was felt that further keratoplasty procedures were unlikely to be successful. A second glaucoma tube shunt was placed immediately prior to the placement of the Boston keratoprosthesis in this video.
