Forced traction test

Richard C. Allen, MD, PhD

Additional Notes: Length 00:53

This is Richard Allen at the University of Iowa. This video demonstrates forced traction testing. This is a useful test in patients who have enophthalmos. Testing is performed to determine whether the eye will be able to be pushed forward with surgery. The toothed forceps are placed at the insertion of the medial and lateral rectus muscles and gentle traction is performed anteriorly. In this case the normal, left eye is able to be moved forward. The question is on the whether the right eye will be able to be moved forward. In this case the traction testing shows that the enophthalmos should be able to be surgically improved by placing an implant in the posterior orbital space.
