Intraocular pressure measurement with Tonopen

Richard C. Allen, MD, PhD, FACS
Additional Notes: Length 00:47

Intraocular pressure can be measured with a portable device called a Tonopen®. A sterile cover should be placed over the end of the device after each use of the Tonopen. This slips over the end of the Tonopen. The button on the device is then depressed to turn the instrument on.  The patient is given a drop of topical anesthetic. The device is then used to press against the front of the cornea a number of times until an audible "beep" is heard. The intraocular pressure is then displayed digitally on the panel of the instrument. Usually, two or three measurements are performed in order to ensure accuracy.
