Schirmer test

Richard C. Allen, MD, PhD, FACS
Additional Notes: 00:28

Schirmer strips are used to determine the aqueous production of each eye.  The strips are packaged sterilely.  The end of the strip is bent and the bent end is placed in the inferior fornix of each eye.  The patient is then asked to close their eyes for 5 minutes.  The test can be performed with or without topical anesthesia.  After 5 minutes, the strips are removed and the amount of wetting of the strips is measured using the scale that is printed on the package.
