Better Late Than Never: Trypan Blue

Thomas A. Oetting, MS, MD; Luke Wendel, MD

Here we show a rhexis on a patient where we have a poor red reflex that is not really appreciated until we have started the rhexis. In this case we opted to remove the OVD and to stain the capsule with trypan blue even though we had already started. We took care to not disrupt the initial capsular flap (and potentially go radial) when we entered with the trypan blue canula and did not rub the capsule as we do when we use trypan in the typical fashion prior to starting the rhexis. In this case adding the trypan blue was a big help in finishing the rhexis.
