Gold Weight Removal

This is Richard Allen at the University of Iowa. This video demonstrates removal of a previously placed gold weight. The patient has a history of a Bells palsy which has resolved. An incision is made with the 15 blade along the upper eyelid crease. Westcott scissors are then used to dissect through the orbicularis muscle to expose the gold weight. The gold weight had been secured to the anterior surface of the tarsus with 6-0 Prolene sutures. These sutures are removed with the Westcott scissors. It is not uncommon for a capsule to have formed around the weight. Once the weight has been freed from its attachments, it can be removed. Hemostasis is obtained with the bipolar cautery. The incision can then be closed with interrupted 6-0 Prolene sutures placed in an interrupted fashion. The patient returns in one week for suture removal.
