Transcript

This is Richard Allen at the University of Iowa.

This video demonstrates a temporary suture tarsorrhaphy.

In this case, it is at the end of an enucleation procedure. A 5-0 chromic suture is placed through the lower eyelid to exit out the Meibomian gland orifices. The suture is then placed through the upper eyelid Meibomian gland orifices and exits superior to the lashes. The suture is turned back around to enter above the lashes and exit at the Meibomian gland orifices. The suture is then placed though the lower Meibomian gland orifices to exit adjacent to the original entry site. This is essentially a mattress suture. The suture is tied. Usually only 2-3 sutures are needed. An additional suture is then placed in the same manner – through the lower eyelid, then upper eyelid, the back through the upper eyelid, and to the lower lid. For 5-0 chromic suture, this will remain intact for approximately 3 weeks. Sometimes the patient will develop a little inflammation around the suture.
