Conjunctivoplasty for conjunctivochalasis

This video demonstrates the use of a conjunctivoplasty in a patient with conjunctivochalasis.
The patient has a history of epiphora due to the redundant conjunctiva impeding the flow of tears to the puncta. The area of the redundant conjunctiva has been identified and is grasped with toothed forceps. Westcott scissors are then used to excise the redundant conjunctiva, leaving the underlying Tenon's. I used to close this defect with 7-0 Vicryl suture, now I do not close the defect and leave the area to heal on its own. This results in adequate treatment of this problem.
Attention is then directed to the other side. This is usually a bilateral process. The area of the redundant conjunctiva is identified and grasped with the tooth forceps. The redundant conjunctiva is excised. In this case, there is an additional area of redundant conjunctiva medially and this is excised. At the conclusion of the case, antibiotic ointment is placed in the eye and the patient will return in one week for reevaluation.
